The important thing to remember is that all towers, servers, laptops, notebooks and netbooks except for Macs are slow right our of the box . The main reason they are slow is because major system manufacturers install 30-day limited functionality applications, demo software and trial programs from 3rd party manufacturers. This allows them to save money. The problem arises when 20, 30, 40 or even 50 plus applications are starting up with Windows and hogging system resources slowing down your expensive machine, creating sluggish responsiveness and delaying your start up and shutdown times. While there is no "best way" to back up, one thing is certain: You need at least two backups - one onsite and one offsite. Your onsite backup can be to an external hard drive, a NAS drive or even another user on the network. Your offsite backup can be an online service (we like www.crashplan.com) There are advantages and disadvantages to both.
Offsite backups are usually the transportation of a portable backup device/media or over the internet. Online backups are slow to back up and slow to restore. The more data you are backing up, the longer it will take. (read more)
PC Fixer's favorite PC laptop manufacturer is Lenovo. If money is your primary motivating factor, Dell and Toshiba represent an excellent value. We also love Mac machines if you can afford them. We do not recommend brands such as HP or VAIO. HP laptops are consistently the most unreliable with respect to hardware and VAIO laptops are far too expensive and loaded with bloatware.
